To Be Black

This is my final action project for the Fall term, in which we had to create a poem or song and make a video to go alongside it. I chose to create a poem. The poem is called "To Be Black." The poem discusses how Black people are often faced with injustice, and how we can turn that injustice into justice. Writing this poem was somewhat of a challenge, as I rarely, if ever, write poems. Despite this, I enjoyed writing this. Another challenge I faced was thinking of what I wanted my video to be. After a bit of thinking, I decided for my video to be shots of the Riverwalk. The Riverwalk is a very beautiful place, and I thought it would make a nice background for my poem. This project also helped me understand SDG 16.       Writing this poem made me think about how peace in our society feels unattainable. With so much injustice happening around us daily, it’s easy to forget the good things in the world, which makes SDG 16 all the more important. This also helped me understan

Not Just Junk

This is my 8th action project, which is for my class Par for the Course. For this action project, we had to create a minigolf course based on one of the SDGs. The SDG that I chose was SDG 12 , which is Responsible Consumption and Production. In our daily lives, things like takeout containers and plastic water bottles are often littered instead of being recycled properly. So, while creating this course, I wanted to show people that things that are normally viewed as junk can be used for more things than just litter. To show this, I created a golf course using things that are usually just litter. I made two different routes, both using materials that are usually recycled. The first route uses a tunnel made out of plastic bottles. You'd have to hit the ball and hit the wooden plank, where the ball would ricochet into the goal. While up to chance, it is still possible to get a hole-in-one this way. The second route is much simpler. All you have to do is hit the ball around the w

Filters for All

This is my 7th action project, in which we had to design a water filter. Water filtration has been the main thing we've discussed in this unit. We even went to a water filtration plant here in Chicago. It was a very insightful experience, although I would rather not go again. It was very deep underground and very loud, both things I didn't like. However, seeing all the work that goes into ensuring our water is clean was still very interesting. In class, we've also discussed ppm (parts per million), atoms, molecules, and logs. I found it to be quite nice. It was a lot of work at times, but nothing impossible.      For this experiment, I wanted to know if I could make a water filter by myself. My design was the top of a plastic jug. The inside of the jug had 3 layers. The 1st was activated carbon (to filter the water), the 2nd was a coffee filter (to separate the layers), and the 3rd was cotton balls (for the water to soak through instead of just common right out.) After

Penpal Letter

This is my sixth action project, where we had to write two letters to a pen pal. One letter was about the Day of the Dead and what ofrendas are. The other one was about the neighborhood of Pilsen and the things you can do there. We also had to write a dialogue between ourselves and our penpal introducing and describing ourselves. In our Spanish class, we've been going over descriptive adjectives, the verb ser, and how to introduce ourselves. While working on this AP, I've learned a lot about the neighborhood of Pilsen, and how the people of Pilsen celebrate the Day of the Dead. I found recording myself speaking in Spanish to be somewhat challenging, as I've never recorded something and published it. I'm proud of myself for getting this action project done in time. Dear Penpal,     Pilsen is located very close to the center of Chicago. There are many things to do there, such as visiting the National Museum of Mexican Art. This museum holds over 6,000 pieces of art, with
