To the Children of the Future

Image
This is my action project for my class Poetic Justice. During this class, we learned about how politics and poetry intersect with each other. To grasp this, we read many poems about incarceration, immigration, racism, and many other topics that relate to our overall theme of political poetry. We also learned how poetics can expand beyond poetry, such as through works of art and movies. We visited art galleries that featured many different works of art, all of which showcased poetry through art forms outside of poetry. For example, the first gallery we went to featured a picture of a toy truck with many other toys surrounding it. This art was made to show the innocence of Black youth, and how we have to protect it, as many of these Black youths have their lives cut short due to instances of police brutality. This art and the many others we saw showcased poetry in its many different forms.      For this action project, we had to write a poem about a poet...

To Be Black

This is my final action project for the Fall term, in which we had to create a poem or song and make a video to go alongside it. I chose to create a poem. The poem is called "To Be Black." The poem discusses how Black people are often faced with injustice, and how we can turn that injustice into justice. Writing this poem was somewhat of a challenge, as I rarely, if ever, write poems. Despite this, I enjoyed writing this. Another challenge I faced was thinking of what I wanted my video to be. After a bit of thinking, I decided for my video to be shots of the Riverwalk. The Riverwalk is a very beautiful place, and I thought it would make a nice background for my poem. This project also helped me understand SDG 16.       Writing this poem made me think about how peace in our society feels unattainable. With so much injustice happening around us daily, it’s easy to forget the good things in the world, which makes SDG 16 all the more important. ...

Not Just Junk

Image
This is my 8th action project, which is for my class Par for the Course. For this action project, we had to create a minigolf course based on one of the SDGs. The SDG that I chose was SDG 12 , which is Responsible Consumption and Production. In our daily lives, things like takeout containers and plastic water bottles are often littered instead of being recycled properly. So, while creating this course, I wanted to show people that things that are normally viewed as junk can be used for more things than just litter. To show this, I created a golf course using things that are usually just litter. I made two different routes, both using materials that are usually recycled. The first route uses a tunnel made out of plastic bottles. You'd have to hit the ball and hit the wooden plank, where the ball would ricochet into the goal. While up to chance, it is still possible to get a hole-in-one this way. The second route is much simpler. All you have to do is hit the ball ar...

Filters for All

Image
This is my 7th action project, in which we had to design a water filter. Water filtration has been the main thing we've discussed in this unit. We even went to a water filtration plant here in Chicago. It was a very insightful experience, although I would rather not go again. It was very deep underground and very loud, both things I didn't like. However, seeing all the work that goes into ensuring our water is clean was still very interesting. In class, we've also discussed ppm (parts per million), atoms, molecules, and logs. I found it to be quite nice. It was a lot of work at times, but nothing impossible.      For this experiment, I wanted to know if I could make a water filter by myself. My design was the top of a plastic jug. The inside of the jug had 3 layers. The 1st was activated carbon (to filter the water), the 2nd was a coffee filter (to separate the layers), and the 3rd was cotton balls (for the water to soak through instead ...

Penpal Letter

This is my sixth action project, where we had to write two letters to a pen pal. One letter was about the Day of the Dead and what ofrendas are. The other one was about the neighborhood of Pilsen and the things you can do there. We also had to write a dialogue between ourselves and our penpal introducing and describing ourselves. In our Spanish class, we've been going over descriptive adjectives, the verb ser, and how to introduce ourselves. While working on this AP, I've learned a lot about the neighborhood of Pilsen, and how the people of Pilsen celebrate the Day of the Dead. I found recording myself speaking in Spanish to be somewhat challenging, as I've never recorded something and published it. I'm proud of myself for getting this action project done in time. Dear Penpal,     Pilsen is located very close to the center of Chicago. There are many things to do there, such as visiting the National Museum of Mexican Art. This museum holds over 6,000 pieces of art, w...

Music and Meaning

Image
This is my 5th action project, in which we had to select two songs and describe how one song is a modern recreation of another. The songs I chose are Sorry by Beyoncé, and Revolutionary Generation by Public Enemy. I remember looking for songs to do for this action project, and those two are the ones that stuck out to me the most. When I looked at both songs' lyrics, I saw that the message, at its core, was the same in both songs. Getting to write that out on paper was something very enjoyable. One of my favorite things to do is writing and analyze media, and this was the perfect thing for me. In conclusion, I found this action project enjoyable. Honestly, making posters over and over again was getting somewhat boring, so getting to do something like this was refreshing. https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vSi8IA0BDsIyQ-K3-E4ocUetfmQ_P-htpV1UtWgt40iuHfuCX237eUkePaRdWQ0P4V1Vjmf0JIEEfYc/pub

The Power of Filtration

Image
This is my fourth action project, in which we measured the TDS of both dirty water and filtered water. At first, we were going kayaking, but it was too cold. Instead, we did this action project. Before starting the project, our hypothesis was that the TDS of the water wouldn't really change because we only used a paper towel.     Our process had 3 steps. First, we measured the TDS of the water using a TDS measurer. Second, we put a paper towel over a cup and poured the dirty water into the cup. The water would seep through the paper towel and into the cup. Finally, we measured the TDS of the water once again. When we filtered the water, it looked like the TDS of the water would've gone down, as the water got clearer.  However, after we measured  the TDS of the water, the filtered water had more TDS in the water than dirty water, meaning our hypothesis was incorrect.         After the filtration process was done,...
